Who was Gen Bipin Rawat ?
The Chief of Defense Staff, General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 other people were killed after the Mi-17V5 helicopter fell in the hills near the town of Coonoor on Wednesday morning.
A survivor is being treated for his injuries at the hospital.
Gen Rawat, 63, was appointed India’s first Chief of Defense Staff in January 2019.

Images from the crash site showed thick plumes of smoke billowing from the shattered wreckage of the helicopter and local people trying to put out the fire.
The helicopter had just taken off from the army base in Sulur and was heading to the city of Wellington, less than 100 km (62 miles) away, where Gen Rawat was to visit the Defense Services General Staff College. .

A year earlier, another of the helicopters had crashed immediately after takeoff during a military exercise in the northern state of Uttarakhand. No casualties were reported.
Early Life and education
Rawat was born in Pauri, Uttarakhand, on March 16, 1958, into a Hindu Garhwali Rajput family.his family had been serving in the Indian army for several generations. His father, Laxman Singh Rawat, was from Sainj village in Pauri Garhwal district and rose to the rank of Lieutenant General.Her mother was from the Uttarkashi district and was the daughter of Kishan Singh Parmar, the former member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Uttarkashi.
Rawat attended Cambrian Hall School in Dehradun and St. Edward School, Shimla He then joined the National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, where he received the ‘Sword of Honor’.
Rawat also graduated from the Defense Services General Staff School (DSSC), Wellington and from the Senior Command Course at the United States Army General Staff and Command College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.Since his tenure at DSSC, he has a master’s degree in Defense Studies, as well as diplomas in Administration and Computer Studies from the University of Madras. In 2011, he received a Doctor of Philosophy from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut for his research on strategic studies of military means.
