Jonathan Chew Wiki
Jonathan Chew Biography
Who is Jonathan Chew ?
A man accused of assaulting Chris Whitty in a Westminster park appeared in a court video link lying on his bed in a robe that revealed his bare chest as he claimed to have coronavirus.
Jonathan Chew, 24, who denies common battery and police obstruction, demanded that the medical director be present at today’s hearing after his own attorney withdrew from the case because he was “professionally embarrassed.”
Chew and 23-year-old real estate agent Lewis Hughes filmed themselves stalking Whitty as he walked through St James’ Park on June 27, and reportedly subjected him to a headlock while demanding a selfie.
Charged
Hughes, who lost his job as a real estate agent after his employer saw the footage, admitted to a common assault in July and was sentenced to eight weeks in jail suspended for two years.
But Chew denied the common assault and obstruction to police after he allegedly gave the name of his brother to officers after the incident.
He appeared in court today live from his room coughing occasionally and wearing a robe that slid down to reveal his bare chest.
His attorney Peter Fallen told the court that he had tested positive for coronavirus.
But Daniel O’Donoghue, prosecuting, questioned the Covid test results.
Before the trial began this afternoon, Fallen told the court that he was withdrawing from the case because he was “professionally embarrassed.”
Mr. Chew, I regret to tell you, for professional reasons,” he told the court.
“I am no longer able to represent Mr. Chew, I regret to tell you, for professional reasons,” he told the court.
“You would probably like to be represented at his trial,” Chief District Judge Paul Goldspring said, “Chew asked.
“It’s a tough question,” Chew replied.
He grew increasingly exasperated during the hearing and insisted that Professor Whitty should be in court.
“The law is that I have the right to come,” he demanded. I want Chris Whitty there.
‘I suspect I know a bit about the law than you,’ replied Judge Goldspring, explaining that Professor Whitty does not have to legally attend court as the facts have been agreed upon between the prosecution and the defense, which means that there is no reason for defense. to question Professor Whitty.
Chew’s case is that he was being playful and he wanted a selfie with Professor Whitty for his mother.
I agreed that Chris Whitty has to be in court, ” Chew yelled over the CVP link.
You are getting it all wrong. I was at court. I agreed that Chris Whitty has to be in court, ” Chew yelled over the CVP link.
“I feel innocent,” he said. “I am responding to a battery charge that I do not believe I have made.”
Judge Goldspring said: ‘A remarkable recovery, I might say, from where he was two minutes ago.
“You’re not listening to me,” Chew said in exasperation. ‘I was diagnosed with coronavirus. Are you saying the crown is not real now? I feel like what you’re doing now is victimizing me. You’re calling me a liar
Judge Goldspring said calmly, “His arrogant approach to the seriousness of these proceedings is impressive.”
“What does gentleman mean,” Chew put in.
“Let me finish,” Judge Goldspring said. I am completely satisfied that he is not so ill that I cannot participate in his rehearsal.
But the trial had to be vacated until January 4, 2022 because Chew was unable to view the CCTV evidence via the video link.
“There comes a point, whether or not Mr. Chew is able to watch [closed-circuit television], that the process becomes something of a sham,” Judge Goldspring said.
Chew has been tasked with finding new legal representation before then and he must appear in person.
He is on parole and must remain at the address listed.
When the police came to his address to see if he was isolating
Fallen told the court at a preliminary hearing this morning that Chew tested positive for Covid about five days ago, meaning he was unable to attend court.
He said: ‘I’m not sure if it was a PCR test or a more comprehensive test than that.

“ They gave us two documents with the NHS logo which were then passed on to the Crown.
“It certainly doesn’t sound good and he’s struggling with a normal sleep pattern as a result.”
O’Donoghue questioned the veracity of the document and said the police have been trying to make inquiries, but the NHS refused to share confidential information with them.
When the police came to his address to see if he was isolating himself, the girlfriend of his brother’s brother opened the door and said that he did not live there, that she did not know where he was and did not know that he had coronavirus.
O’Donoghue said: “It appears that he has breached the conditions of the bail.”
“The Crown is skeptical about the veracity of these documents,” he added, especially since at the last hearing he presented a medical certificate stating that he had tonsillitis.
After Judge Goldspring said that Chew was well enough to continue the process, the defendant sat up straight and no longer appeared to be in bed.
In fact, I have Corona. I’m sick. Very ill, ‘Chew said. I am hot and sweating. I’m delirious ‘.
“You are the judge, not me,” he added.
“It is very kind of you to say, Mr. Chew,” Judge Goldspring said.
Thank you, ‘Chew replied.
Throughout the hearing, Chew became increasingly agitated and said that everyone in court was victimizing him.
He said, ‘Are these the Masons? Is anyone leaning on my lawyer? Is it a conspiracy theory? This is sad.’
At one point he could be seen leaving the room in a robe.
“Judge, I’m delusional right now,” he repeated. ‘I feel like I’m going to pass out and all that, judge.’
Judge Goldspring decided to proceed with the trial as Chew said he was happy to move forward without being represented.
“I, Mr. Jonathan Chew, do not want to be represented,” he announced.
Daniel O’Donoghue, the prosecutor, said he planned to show CCTV footage of the alleged assault during the trial, but since he was on the video link, Chew was unable to see it.
Judge Goldspring stood up for 10 minutes as court staff attempted to show Chew the images via a video link.
He began to cough and blow his nose loudly, as he had done at the beginning of the hearing.
The technology would now allow Chew to view the images, despite Mr. O’Donoghue’s attempts to stand in a chair holding his laptop in front of a camera.
“The reality is that I don’t think we can have a proper trial in the practical circumstances that we have now,” Judge Goldspring said.
At this point, Chew kept moving in and out of the camera’s view. The television was on in the background with what looked like a music video.
He said, “You should get legal advice and get representation, but let me clarify that if you haven’t, I’m afraid it will be difficult because you have a lot of time to do it.”
The judge added that it is impractical to have Professor Chris Whitty in court due to the current national crisis amid the Omicron wave.
After Judge Goldspring left the courtroom, Chew exclaimed, ‘Woohoo ah’ before disconnecting from the video call.
Chew, who had allegedly attended an anti-vax rally in central London prior to the incident, also claims to suffer from ADHD and autism.
His mother, Natasha Chew of Barking, said her behavior was not intended to hurt him and she misinterpreted the situation.
Chew, of Chelmsford, Essex, will face trial in Westminster Magistrates Court on January 4, 2022 for assault and obstruction of an agent in the execution of his duty.
