However, after the victory he went winless, having a drought from 1987 to 1994, but then rejuvenated his career in 1995 with a win at the BC Open. Three years later, he would win the Valero Texas Open and the Tour Championship to finish as fifth in the PGA Tour money list. In 2000, he defeated Tiger Woods in the final group of The Players Championship, and also won at the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic leading to him getting into the top four on the PGA Tour money list, with his net worth increasing significantly thanks to these victories. In 2001, he won at the Shell Houston Open, increasing his season winnings to $1.7 million.

Hal also appeared as part of four US Ryder Cup Teams from 1985 to 2002. He was the non-playing captain of the team in 2004, but was criticized for his performance after Europe beat the USA, especially for pairing Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. In 2007, Sutton would win the Payne Steward Award for his charitable contributions. He was also given the 2004 Omar N. Bradley Spirit of Independence Award and the Golf Writers Association of America’s 2006 Charlie Bartlett Award. In 2008, Hal became eligible to play on the Champions Tour and started playing there.
