Nick Kyrgios’s mother has revealed how Andy Murray helped turn her son’s life around by raising fears that he was self-harming.

The 27-year-old Australian’s appearance in the Wimbledon final was the culmination of a recovery from serious mental health issues.

Kyrgios has previously spoken about his struggles with alcohol, drugs and self-harm in 2019.

Speaking on the eve of the match to the Sydney Morning Herald, his mother Nill said: ‘The self-harming… I saw that and people told me that. I asked him about it and he didn’t want to talk about it at that time.

‘John (Morris, Kyrgios’s former manager) spoke to me that Andy is worried about Nick because he can see some evidence of self-harm.

‘And I blame others for that. For just pressuring him, criticising him. Even people we thought might be supporting him.

‘That period was very hard. I just wanted to be next to him constantly so that I could see him… And if I can’t see him I worry about him so much that it becomes very difficult.’

Nill is unable to travel due to ill health so was back in Australia as her son battled Djokovic on Centre Court.

But she said he is now in a good place. ‘I love it,’ Nill said. ‘He’s very kind and he’s loving. He tells me he loves me every day.

‘When he was little we were so close. It’s nice to have him back. I’m happy for him. He’s happy and enjoying life and appreciating every little thing. It’s a good feeling.’
