Australian actor Andy Ryan has revealed he is in recovery after privately struggling with drug and alcohol addiction since he was a teenager.

The 35-year-old is best known for his roles in TV shows Love Child and INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, and the 2010 film Tomorrow, When the War Began.

He told Who magazine on Friday he was two years sober thanks to an intervention staged by his family in 2018.

Andy recalled how his father, mother, sister, niece and brother-in-law had sat him down and urged him to get his life back on track.

‘I collapsed with relief and just raw emotion because I wasn’t going to call it. My pride and ego was always going to get in the way,’ he said of the intervention.

It was a particularly challenging time for Andy because the girl he was seeing took her own life just days before he entered rehab.

The tragedy inspired him to change his life, and he spent 21 days at the South Pacific Private Rehabilitation Clinic.

After getting clean, Andy was able to rebuild his relationship with his family.

‘My family now have a brother, uncle, son and friend they can now invest and trust in,’ he proudly said.

He also revealed actor Russell Crowe had sent him a letter warning him about his partying on set of Tomorrow, When the War Began.

His bad behaviour resulted in him missing an important call time on set.

While it could have cost him his job, he got a second chance from director Stuart Beattie, who convinced Crowe to write him a letter.

‘[Crowe] explained that when a production company believes in you, you owe that production the duty of care to never put yourself before the film,’ Andy said.
