Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is going vegetarian for Lent to honor the memory of Rep. Jamie Raskin’s late son, Tommy.

The New York Congresswoman revealed her plans to abstain from meat for 40 days in a Twitter post penned on Ash Wednesday – the start of the Christian observance.

Raskin’s son, Tommy, 25, was an outspoken vegan and animal rights activist who took his own life on New Year’s Eve following a battle with depression

Ocasio-Cortez – who was raised Catholic – tweeted that she was hoping some of her 12.4 million followers would join her in adopting a vegetarian diet for the Lenten season.

‘Ok everyone, I need help! A few weeks ago I told @RepRaskin that this year I wanted to adopt a vegetarian diet for Lent in memory of his son Tommy,’ she wrote.

‘He said, “Well you’d have to do it the way Tommy would, which means bring people along with you!”‘

Ocasio-Cortez told her followers that she had three rules for those who were interested in joining her.

‘Rules are 1) No judgement 2) Make it your own (you can go full 40 days, just veggie Mondays, etc 3) Be inclusive (no need to observe Lent to join)’.

The Raskins, for instance, are Jewish and do not observe Lent.

The social media savvy star then asked her fans to share their ‘favorite veggie recipes’ in the replies section.

Dozens of fans heeded her request, and left links to to tasty meals, including chickpea gumbo, black bean burgers and butternut squash pasta.

One fans also recommend Ocasio-Cortez purchase the cookbook ‘Decolonize Your Diet’ by ‘Chicanx, genderqueer, anti-capitalist,  cookbook author’ Luz Calvo.

Ocasio-Cortez tweeted her sadness following news of Tommy Raskin’s death on New Year’s Eve.

‘My heart completely shatters for my dear friend @RepRaskin, his wife Sarah, and their family in this devastating loss. Tommy was an incredible and brilliant beam of light. All our thoughts are with the Raskin family, and we pray for support to envelop them in this unimaginable time,’ she wrote.

In a statement, Rep. Raskin revealed his son left the family a note prior to taking his own life.

‘He left us this farewell note on New Year’s Eve day: ‘Please forgive me. My illness won today. Please look after each other, the animals, and the global poor for me. All my love, Tommy.”

Just weeks after Tommy’s death, Rep. Raskin, who is a former constitutional law professor, went on to lead the impeachment prosecution in the Senate of former President Donald Trump.
