Toone, who stands 6 feet 9 inches tall, was a highly sought-after Yonkers, New York, recruit who joined MU in 1975 to play for famed coach Al McGuire.
On those all-star Warriors teams, Toone struggled to get playing time, which occasionally resulted in a tense relationship with McGuire. He averaged 5.5 points on average in his freshman season and 4.4 points in his sophomore season.

“When we won the title, it all paid off,” Toone remarked to Milwaukee Journal reporter Mary Schmitt in 1987. “With all the conflict Al and I had, it meant a lot to me.”
In Toone’s final two years at MU, head coach Hank Raymonds saw an improvement in his performance. In the 1978–1979 season, Toone assumed a prominent position as a senior, averaging 18.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest.
