High blood pressure means a person’s heart must work that much harder in order to pump blood around the body. If the condition is left untreated, life-threatening conditions could ensue including a heart attack or stroke. A person should regularly check what their pressure reading is, monitor their diet and take this supplement which has been proven to lower blood pressure.

Fish oil is oil derived from the tissues of oily fish.

Fish oils contain omega-3 fatty acids which are precursors of certain eicosanoids that are known to reduce inflammation in the body and improve hypertriglyceridemia.

Good sources of fish oil other than fish include flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and canola oil.

What is omega-3 fish oil supplements?

Harvard Health said: “Omega-3 fatty acids play important roles in brain function, normal growth and development and inflammation.

“Deficiencies have been linked to a variety of health problems including cardiovascular disease, some cancers, mood disorders, arthritis and more.

“Fish oil supplements have been promoted as an easy way to protect the heart, ease inflammation, improve mental health and lengthen life.

“Such claims are one reason why people spend more than  $1billion a year on over-the-counter fish oil.”

How fish oil supplements help with high blood pressure

The Mayo Clinic said: “Multiple studies report modest reductions in blood pressure in people who take fish oil supplements.

“There’s some evidence that this effect is greater for people with moderate to severe hypertension than those with mild hypertension.”

In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, the consumption of fish oil and how it can help to reduce blood pressure in adults was investigated.

The study concluded that taking a daily supplement of fish oil helps to reduce blood pressure reading.

Omega-3 fish oil contains both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

These supplements are essential nutrients that are important in preventing and helping to manage heart disease.

Some benefits of taking omega-3 fatty acids include helping to lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides, slow the development of plaque in the arteries, reduce the chance of abnormal heart rhythm, reduce the likelihood of heart attack and stroke and lessen the chance of sudden cardiac death in people with heart disease.

The American Heart Association said: “Everyone should eat fish at least twice a week.

“Salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, lake trout and tuna are especially high in omega-3 fatty acids.

“While foods are your best bet for getting omega-3s in your diet, fish oil supplements are also available for those who do not like fish.

“The heart-healthy benefits of regular doses of fish oil supplements are unclear, so talk to your doctor to see if they’re right for you.

“If you have heart disease or high triglyceride levels, you may need even more omega-3 fatty acids.”
