A bloated tummy in the morning may not be the best start to your day.

If your bloating isn’t caused by a condition, like a food intolerance or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but rather certain foods you eat, picking the right foods at breakfast could prevent you from bloating.

Dr Joseph Salhab is a US-based gastroenterologist, also known as The Stomach Doctor on TikTok. With more than a million followers, he shared five breakfast foods “that won’t cause bloating and gas”.

1. Avocado

2. Sourdough bread

3. Pineapple

4. Kiwi or papaya

5. Ginger tea

Dr Salhab explained: “First is avocado which contains digestive enzymes that help break down fats.

“If you’re looking for a good breakfast bread that’s lower in gluten, is lower in fructans, that means less gas production, contains prebiotics, try sourdough bread. It’s amazing for your gut health.”

He continued: “Pineapple which contains bromelain, helps digest proteins.

“Kiwi is another fruit that contains digestive enzymes. And so is papaya.”

Finally, if you’re looking for a nice morning tea, Dr Salhab recommends ginger tea.

He added: “You can use honey as sweetener. Honey contains digestive enzymes that help break down starches.”

A pharmacist may also be able to help with bloating, by offering laxatives to help treat constipation or medicines like Buscopan to help ease the bloating.

But the NHS says see a GP if:

  • you’ve been feeling bloated for three weeks or more
  • you feel bloated regularly (more than 12 times a month)
  • you’ve tried changing your diet but keep feeling bloated
  • you have a swelling or lump in your tummy
  • you have bloating along with being sick, diarrhoea, constipation, weight loss or blood in your poo
  • you find it difficult to move or do daily activities because you’re bloated
