The early warning signs of cancer can be subtle, but knowing what to look for can unlock the path to earlier diagnosis.

That’s why you must pay attention to any new or unexplained changes, ranging from breathlessness to blood in your pee.

Getting tested could put your mind at rest. Therefore, an expert has urged that noticing anything unusual should prompt you to contact your GP practice.

NHS England’s national clinical director for cancer, Professor Peter Johnson, told The Mirror: “Cancer symptoms and early warning signs can be very varied, with some being less obvious than others.

“But what’s important to know is what is normal for you, so that you can spot any changes. If you have any concerns, or if something in your body doesn’t feel quite right, you should contact your GP practice.

“It might be nothing, but diagnosing cancer as early as possible could save your life.”

Blood cancer is considered the fifth most common type of cancer in the UK, claiming over 41,000 new victims each year.

While the key symptoms, including breathlessness, night sweats or feeling tired when you’re not sure why, can be quite common, if something doesn’t feel right for you, you should contact your local GP practice. “Finding cancer earlier saves lives,” Professor Johnson added.

The following signs warrant contacting your GP in order to rule out cancer:

  • Breathlessness
  • Frequent infections
  • Unexplained night sweats
  • Unexpected bruising or bleeding
  • Blood in your pee
  • An unexplained lump
  • Blood in your poo (this may look red or black)
  • Unexplained weight loss.

And if these signs last for three weeks or more, you should also get them checked:

  • Tummy trouble (discomfort or diarrhoea)
  • Unexplained pain
  • Feeling tired and unwell
  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Unusual, pale or greasy poo
  • A cough.
