Here’s a good reason to spring-clean your pantry today: Four different kinds of Gold Medal–brand flour have been recalled due to possible contamination with salmonella.

The recall was issued after salmonella was recently found in a sample of Gold Medal flour, which is owned by General Mills, according to a statement from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Salmonella causes more than one million infections in the US each year, and contaminated foods are to blame for most of them, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While most people recover without treatment, a small number of people become severely ill enough that they need to be hospitalized.

If you have any Gold Medal flour with the following packaging details in your home, you should throw it out ASAP, per the FDA statement:

  • Gold Medal Unbleached All Purpose Flour, five-pound package. Universal product code (UPC): 000-16000-19610. Better if used by date: 3/27/2024 through 3/28/2024.
  • Gold Medal Unbleached All Purpose Flour, 10-pound package. Universal product code (UPC): 000-16000-19580. Better if used by date: 3/27/2024 through 3/28/2024.
  • Gold Medal Bleached All Purpose Flour, two-pound package. Universal product code (UPC): 000-16000-10710. Better if used by date: 3/27/2024 through 3/28/2024.
  • Gold Medal Bleached All Purpose Flour, five-pound package. Universal product code (UPC): 000-16000-10610. Better if used by date: 3/27/2024 through 3/28/2024.

If you’ve recently consumed the recalled flour, be on the lookout for potential symptoms of salmonella, just to be safe. These include diarrhea (that is sometimes bloody), fever, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and headache, and they can start anytime from six hours to six days after exposure. You should seek medical help if you have diarrhea and a fever higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit, bloody stool, diarrhea that doesn’t improve after three days, or prolonged vomiting, or if you’re experiencing dehydration.
