In the depths yet another COVID winter, Chrissy Teigen seems to have found what we could all use more of at the moment: more energy and less anxiety. Her secret? Giving up alcohol.
On Wednesday, Teigen gave an update on her sobriety journey six months after she decided to stop drinking. “I have no idea what I’m doing honestly, but I do know a few things: I now have endless energy, way less anxiety (no more benzos!) and I am *happier* and more present than ever,” she wrote on Instagram.
Teigen first revealed she’d given up alcohol in December of 2020, crediting the book Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whitaker. “One month ago, on my birthday, I got this book from my doctor and friend,” Teigen shared via Instagram Stories, per US Weekly. “I was done with making an ass of myself in front of people (I’m still embarrassed), tired of day drinking and feeling like shit by 6, not being able to sleep. I have been sober ever since.”
Getting sober is rarely a linear journey, and Teigen has been open about the ups and downs. In September she posted about her 50-day sobriety streak. “It should be nearly a year but I had a few (wine) hiccups in the road,” she said via Instagram. “This is my longest streak yet! I still dunno if I’ll never drink again but I do know it no longer serves me in ANY way. I don’t get more fun, I don’t dance, I don’t get relaxed. I get sick, fall asleep and wake up sick, having missed what was probably a fun night. I had my fun with it and appreciate anyone that can enjoy it responsibly!!!!”
Even now, four months later, the Cravings author still isn’t sure what the future of her sober lifestyle looks like. “Even though I don’t ever crave [alcohol] now, time has not exactly flown by,” she wrote. “I prob won’t be excited til a larger milestone like at leasssst 5 years, and sometimes I don’t even know if I necessarily won’t ever drink again.”

After nearly two years of living in a pandemic, alcohol consumption has risen sharply. In a 2021 U.S. survey conducted by analytics firm The Harris Poll, nearly one in five people reported “heavy drinking” over the past month, per USA Today. And alcohol use has climbed particularly among women—one 2020 study, conducted by the Rand Corporation and researchers at the Indiana University School of Public Health and published in JAMA Network Open, found that women reported 41% more heavy drinking days during the pandemic than before.
But as more people start to examine the role alcohol plays in their lives, à la Teigen, the choice to give up alcohol (either mostly or entirely) as part of the sober-curious movement is also getting more common, bolstered by celebs like Teigen and a boom in nonalcoholic drink options.
“It’s pretty cool,” Teigen said of her six-month sobriety journey. “I look forward to having my full body reset after 1 year, then reevaluating to see my new hopes and wishes for the future! Let’s goooo.”
