Clarence was the son of Barbara and Clarence Darnell Gilyard Sr., an officer in the United States Air Force. He was the second of six children born to his parents and had five siblings. He was raised primarily as a Lutheran before becoming Catholic in the 1990s.
During his adolescence, he lived in the San Bernardino suburb of Rialto, California, and graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1974. He played football in college and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He received a tennis scholarship but dropped out before finishing his studies. Following that, he majored in acting at California State University, Long Beach, and worked as a waiter while looking for acting opportunities. His bachelor’s degree was earned at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
