The Supreme Court announced on Sunday that Justice Clarence Thomas was in the hospital.

Justice Clarence Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. Friday evening after experiencing flu-like symptoms. He underwent tests, was diagnosed with an infection, and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics. His symptoms are abating, he is resting comfortably, and he expects to be released from the hospital in a day or two. Justice Thomas will participate in the consideration and discussion of any cases for which he is not present on the basis of the briefs, transcripts, and audio of the oral arguments.

Thomas is the second-oldest justice on the Court right now, after 83-year-old Justice Stephen Breyer, who is retiring once a replacement is confirmed. Joe Biden has nominated Ketanji Brown Jackson to replace Breyer. Her hearings start in the Senate Judiciary Committee tomorrow.

Fortunately, it sounds like Thomas is recovering, with medication. But just as we have seen in the past, the Court doesn’t necessarily tell us when there are medical issues right away. They tend not to tell us anything until they can say something positive. That’s not exactly keeping us informed, but it is good to hear that he’s doing better.

According to CBS News correspondent Matt Pieper, the illness is not COVID-related.

Most Americans wished him well. Unfortunately, many on the left proved what nasty and evil people they are, and who couldn’t show any humanity because they are such creatures of the leftist narrative. Not only were they lacking in any kind of empathy for Thomas, but they were also spreading delusional conspiracy theories about his wife.

There were many more.

The Daily Caller shared in a recent article that his wife did an interview with him in 2018 for the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF), in which she asked him about what sustained him through all the attacks and challenges he has faced.

To begin the conversation, Mrs. Thomas asked her husband to describe some of his “lessons learned” in ascendance to the Supreme Court, citing his “wingspan” from “poverty in Georgia” to “left-wing radical” and more. “When you look at why you’re still here or how you managed to survive, it’s beyond me,” the justice said in response. “Certainly, it would be miracle after miracle after miracle,” he said of how he reached his current station.

Mrs. Thomas asked her husband about the role of humility in his life and job. “It focuses you,” the justice said, turning the conversation to the role of faith in his work. “Because it tells you not to focus on whether you’re praised or criticized.”

It continued:

“What really matters is whether or not you do what you are called to do,” Justice Thomas said. “Faith … it gives content and meaning to the oath I took.At the end of my oath … you say, ‘so help me, God.’ It’s an oath to God,” the justice said. “So, if you have a strong faith in God, then that oath gains in meaning and content. So, when you violate that, you’re not violating a contract or a mere promise, but an oath to God.”

“I go to Mass before I go to work, and the reason for that is not just habit,” he said. “It … starts you in a way of doing this job, a secular job, the right way for the right reasons.”

Obviously, Thomas is made of much sterner stuff than liberals — and that’s what has carried him through his whole life.
