He was charged with severe assault and placed on probation two weeks after graduating from high school. Derrick then went to Kilgore College. He broke his probation and received a five-year prison sentence, but only served three and a half. A friend then introduced him to mixed martial arts. He resumed boxing under George Foreman’s instruction. Lewis, though, decided to concentrate on mixed martial arts after dominating his first professional MMA battle.
