can seem harmless at first glance because the symptoms do not necessarily make you feel unwell. In fact, you can live with the chronic condition for years without knowing it. Diabetes only tends to assert itself when blood sugar levels are consistently high and when this occurs any of these three eye symptoms may develop.

Glaucoma

High blood sugar can cause an increase in a specific glycoprotein, called fibronectin, to form in your eye.

Having more fibronectin in your eye may block your eye’s natural drainage system, which can lead to glaucoma.

The American Diabetes Association states that people with diabetes are “more likely to suffer from glaucoma”.

Other symptoms of high blood sugar may include:

  • Increased thirst and a dry mouth.
  • Needing to pee frequently.
  • Tiredness.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Unintentional weight loss.
  • Recurrent infections, such as thrush, bladder infections (cystitis) and skin infections.
  • Tummy pain.
  • Feeling or being sick.
