Many people swear by wearing socks in bed, claiming they help with warmth and even improve sleep quality. But experts have now revealed a rather stomach-churning reason why this habit could do you more harm than good.
Scientists have found that wearing socks to bed creates the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. The combination of body heat, sweat, and fabric creates a breeding ground for germs that could lead to fungal infections, unpleasant odours, and even skin issues. According to hygiene experts, some people don’t change their socks often enough, meaning they are effectively sleeping in a build-up of bacteria from the entire day.
On the @calmdownpod TikTok account, the hosts revealed that “researchers are urging people to stop wearing unclean socks to bed.”
This will at least provide some relief for those who only wear bed socks, because it doesn’t mean you have to endure a cold and uncomfortable winter.
But if you’re someone who wears the same socks you’ve had on all day, you might want to reconsider.
One shocking study found that socks can be even dirtier than a toilet seat if worn for long periods without being washed.
It claimed the sweat and moisture trapped inside create an ideal setting for bacteria to multiply, potentially leading to foot infections such as athlete’s foot.
Dirty socks in bed can also transfer bacteria to your sheets.
Dr Karan Raj has previously warned against sleeping in socks for this very reason.
He stated that keeping feet covered all night prevents proper ventilation, increasing the risk of fungal growth and even toenail infections.
For those who insist on wearing socks in bed, hygiene experts advise making sure they are fresh and clean before slipping them on.
