Elzhi Facts
- A massive fan of hip hop music from childhood, Elzhi used to make numerous visits, in his youth, to the Hip Hop Shop in his hometown of Detroit, a clothing store that had been opened in 1993 by fashion designer Maurice Malone. That store was more well known for its open-mic contests than its clothing and Elzhi used to participate in these contests where he would often get the opportunity to make acquaintances with and learn from Detroit’s most talented MCs and rappers.
- In 1998, he had recorded several songs with local hip-hop artists which had resulted in the content of the Out of Focus EP, which was released later that year, his first major musical release of any sort.
- A year later, he had joined a hip hop trio 9-2-5 Colony but the group had disbanded after recording a few songs together. A lot of their material also remained incomplete and unreleased.
- By 2000, he had started attracting the attention of the Detroit-based hip hop group Slum Village who soon took him under their wing. Initially, the group had intended for him to be just a featured artist with some of their work but were so impressed with him that they had soon made him a full-time member of the group.
- In 2002, he had started recording his first album with Slum Village, titled Trinity: Past, Present, And Future. During the recording sessions for this album, one of the earliest tracks was Aerodynamic Remix, the original version of which had been featured on the soundtrack of the 2001 French action thriller film Kiss of the Dragon.
- In 2004, he, in collaboration with rapper, record producer, and DJ Nick Speed, had formed the Libido Sounds label to release Witness My Growth: The Mixtape 97-04, a double CD mixtape of Elzhi’s unreleased solo material from as far back as 1997 when he was just 19 years old.
- In May 2011, he had released a mixtape titled Elmatic which was a homage to iconic American rapper, songwriter, and entrepreneur Nas‘s debut album Illmatic (1994). The mixtape was very well received by hip hop fans and was widely regarded as one of the best projects released that year.
