A vegan diet, if well-planned, can be a boon for gut health due to its high nutrient content, but it comes with a cautionary note about potential nutrient shortfalls. Chris Dubberley of Incontinence Shop has highlighted the benefits and issued a warning.

He said: “A vegan diet rich in antioxidants, folate, and magnesium supports a healthy gut microbiome, which in turn can improve overall gut health and mental wellbeing by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. The diverse plant-based foods in a vegan diet promote a balanced gut microbiome. This balance encourages the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, the ‘feel-good’ hormone, which can improve your mood.

“The vegan lifestyle’s emphasis on mindful eating and holistic wellbeing can also contribute to improved gut health and mental wellbeing. However, vegans should be mindful of potential nutrient deficiencies, such as Vitamin B12, iron, and zinc, as these also help maintain gut health and prevent issues like brain fog and low mood.

“Protein intake is important not only for overall health but also for maintaining a healthy gut. Vegans should have a variety of plant-based proteins in their diet, including legumes, tofu, brown rice, quinoa, and nuts, to support their dietary needs.

“Protein plays a big role in metabolism, immune function, and muscle growth. Regularly eating protein-rich vegan foods helps to meet these needs.”
