Frances Tiafoe Facts

  1. Born to Sierra Leonean immigrants in Hyattsville, Maryland, Frances was raised at the JTCC (Junior Tennis Champions Center), a tennis training center and preparatory school in College Park, Maryland. It is a USTA (United States Tennis Association) regional training center where his father used to work as the head of maintenance.
  2. His father had immigrated to the United States in 1993 and his mother had joined him in 1996, both escaping the civil war in Sierra Leone. In 1999, his father started working as a day laborer who helped build the aforementioned JTCC. When the center was completed, he was hired as its on-site custodian and given a spare office to live at the facility.
  3. Frances and his twin brother Franklin used to live with their father at the center 5 days a week for about the next decade or so. They would play tennis there and then stay with their mother when she was not working night shifts as a nurse.
  4. When Frances was 15 years old, he won the 2013 edition of the Orange Bowl (a prestigious junior tennis tournament, among the 5 that are rated as ‘Grade A’ by the ITF (International Tennis Federation)), becoming the tournament’s youngest-ever boys’ singles champion.
  5. At the youth tier, he had reached a peak world ranking of number 2 and had reached the semi-final of the 2014 US Open in the boys’ singles event.
  6. At the 2015 French Open, he became the youngest American player to have reached the main draw of the French Open since Michael Chang in 1989.
  7. In August 2015, Frances finished his junior career by winning the USTA Junior National Championship. The win had earned him a wild card into the main draw of the 2015 US Open.
  8. When he won his first singles title on the ATP Tour – the 2018 Delray Beach Open (ATP 250), he became the youngest American player to win a tournament on the ATP Tour since Andy Roddick in 2002.
  9. At the 2018 Portugal Open, he became the youngest American player to reach a clay-court final in Europe since Andre Agassi made it to the French Open final in 1990.
  10. At the 2019 Australian Open, he reached the quarter-final of a Grand Slam tournament (Australian Open/French Open/Wimbledon Championship/US Open) for the first time in his career. He had become the youngest American Grand Slam quarter-finalist since Andy Roddick in 2003.
  11. At the 2020 US Open, Frances reached the round of 16 (4th round), becoming the youngest American male player to advance that far in the tournament since Donald Young in 2011.
  12. At the 2021 US Open, he reached the 4th round for the second year in a row, becoming the first American male player to have reached the 2nd week (4th round or better) at the US Open in successive years since Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish (2011–2012).
  13. At the 2022 US Open, he upset 2nd seed and then world number 3 Rafael Nadal in the 4th round to record the biggest win of his career thus far. This made him the first American to defeat Nadal at a Grand Slam tournament since wildcard James Blake at the 2005 US Open. He also became just the 3rd American to defeat Nadal in a Grand Slam tournament after Andy Roddick (2004) and James Blake (2005).
  14. This win also made Frances the youngest American male player to reach the quarter-final of the US Open since Andy Roddick in 2006. In that match, he defeated 9th seed Andrey Rublev to reach the semi-final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career. This made him the first American male player to have reached the semi-final of the US Open since Andy Roddick in 2006 and the first black American male player to do so since the legendary Arthur Ashe in 1972.
  15. In the semi-final of the tournament, he lost to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in a grueling 5-set encounter that lasted for more than 4 hours. He even saved a match point in the 4th set but eventually lost in the decider.
