Garv Sangwan Facts
- Garv had first come into the spotlight on the Indian domestic scene in October 2021 when he was Haryana’s leading wicket-taker, with 13 wickets in just 7 games, in a triumphant campaign in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy (the premier limited-overs domestic competition for men’s under-19 cricket in India). He had starred in the final of the tournament as well where his spell of 3/44 had helped Haryana restrict Maharashtra to a below-par total of 172 runs which was eventually overhauled by Haryana with seven balls to spare.
- This performance had gone a long way in ensuring his selection for both the 2021 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup and the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He had played in India’s opening match of the former tournament, against the United Arab Emirates, and had picked up 2 wickets for 39 runs in 5 overs as the hosts were bundled out for 128 runs, handing India victory by a massive margin of 154 runs.
- He was replaced by Raj Bawa in India’s next match, against Pakistan, and could not return to the playing XI for the rest of the tournament. The trend continued in India’s first match of the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, against South Africa. Soon after that match, India’s captain Yash Dhull and 5 other members of the Indian squad had been tested positive for COVID-19. This meant that all of those players had to miss out on the next (and last) 2 matches of the group stage, against Ireland and Uganda.
- Garv then made the cut for the match against Ireland but was not selected in the match against Uganda. The match against Ireland was his Youth ODI debut and he had picked up 2 wickets for 23 runs in 5 overs as Ireland was bundled out for just 133 runs, handing India victory by a massive margin of 174 runs. All the members of India’s squad who were affected by COVID-19 had recovered in time for the next match, the quarter-final against Bangladesh, and the regular members of the team’s playing XI had regained their spots.
