Yes, literally.

Well, sort of. In spirit, at least.

The Left’s new ridiculous “we are the world” symbol is, in many ways, just as childish as idolizing a teenager who decided not to go to school.

You no doubt remember Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg (yes, even her name is absurd) came to prominence at 15 years old way back in 2018. She decided that she could singlehandedly bully the world into abandoning fossil fuels, and the world elite decided that she was just the child to do it.

She was showered with adulation; she received numerous honors and awards, including an honorary Fellowship of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, inclusion in Time’s 100 most influential people, being the youngest Time Person of the Year, inclusion in the Forbes list of The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women (2019), and nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

She was invited to give testimony in the US House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.  Thunberg attended the UN Climate Action Summit in New York City and was hailed as a hero.  The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) hosted a press conference where Thunberg joined fifteen other children including Ayakha Melithafa, Alexandria Villaseñor, Catarina Lorenzo, Carl Smith and others. She spoke to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP25).

Not bad for a child. Or rather, very bad for every organization that took her this seriously. My God, what were they thinking? Why on earth is a child given such honors for whinging?

But now Thunberg is old news. She is essentially being replaced by a puppet that is going to heal the world.

A puppet called Little Amal.

I hadn’t heard of Little Amal until I ran across this tweet, but when I looked into who/what Little Amal is, I burst out laughing. It is perfect. It perfectly captures the idiocy of modern culture.

Little Amal has traveled over 9,000km embodying the urgent message “Don’t forget about us”. From September 14 – October 2, Amal will travel to New York City in partnership with St. Ann’s Warehouse.

After arriving at JFK Airport, she will travel through all five boroughs, meeting artists, civic leaders, community groups, and young New Yorkers of all backgrounds.

Since the beginning of her journey in 2021, Little Amal has travelled through over 85 cities and been welcomed at more than 190 unique events, reaching an estimated 1 million people live in the 12 countries she has already visited, and millions more online.

“Meeting with civic leaders, community groups, and young New Yorkers of all backgrounds.” I am sure the conversations will be enlightening for all involved.

If not, they will at least be less annoying than any that Greta Thunberg participated in.

The media is, of course, eating it up. It is just the sort of virtue signaling and facile conversation starter that appeals to their own vanity. They can meet a puppet and feel like they have done something. Maybe they can find an analog to the Ukraine flag they can put on their Twitter profile.

She’s dodged protesters in Greecemet the pope at the Vatican and posed beside the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Now a 12-foot-tall puppet is bringing her message to the United States as she walks the streets of New York City.

Artists created Little Amal, whose name means hope in Arabic, to raise awareness about refugee children. Organizers of the theatrical project describe the puppet as a 10-year-old Syrian refugee searching for her uncle. She first made headlines as she trekked across Europe last year.

Now she’s drawing big crowds in the Big Apple at the same time as a growing number of asylum-seekers are arriving on buses from Texas.

Ah, yes, a puppet draws attention to the US border and the cruelty of Republican governors. At least with embracing Little Amal they won’t actually have to give “sanctuary” to actual human beings. They can shake hands with a puppet while they decry the fact that Greg Abbott isn’t happy about thousands of refugees living under a bridge in El Paso.

I think Ron DeSantis has done more to raise awareness of the “refugee crisis” than a puppet. But he is mean, while puppets are cute and undemanding.

“By showing her their welcome, maybe they can extend their welcome to real people that are coming to this city as we speak and need support and need empathy and need their help,” he said in a recent interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour.

Welcoming a puppet is kinda like sheltering people. Sorta. It certainly is more likely to make you feel good because puppets don’t need to eat, have shelter, or require social services that cost millions or billions of dollars.

Our elite ranks are filled with self-satisfied idiots who cherish symbolic gestures while ignoring the difficult realities and trade-offs of the real world. They embrace puppets and children because they can parade around proving how compassionate they are while imposing the real costs of their choices on others. They fly around to conferences to discuss climate change and embrace puppets to prove how much they care about real human tragedy.

Disgusting.
