Guinness has launched a new alcohol free version of its famed stout in Britain and customers are already giving the it rave reviews.

The Irish brewer initially launched Guinness 0.0 in October 2020 after a four-year endeavour to replicate the taste of the original but the product was recalled amid concerns of unsafe microbiological contamination in some cans.

As of today, the alcohol-free beer will be available in select Morrisons and Co-op stores this week followed by distribution in further supermarkets and pubs nationwide.

The low-calorie option contains less than 75 calories per can, compared to the 125 calories of the original.

The product was developed by an innovation team based at Guinness’s brewery at St James’s Gate in Dublin, where founder Arthur Guinness started brewing ales in 1759.

The early stages of the brewing process mirror those of standard Guinness, with the same main ingredients used – water, barley, hops and yeast.

The key difference in Guinness 0.0 is the use of cold filtration which is used to remove alcohol from the brew.

The brewer said Guinness 0.0 was a response to a growing consumer appetite for non-alcohol, lower-calorie beverages and it seems customers are happy with the result, hailing the drink a ‘game changer’.

‘Just gonna say it… I think that 0.0 Guinness is an excellent job and that you’d be hard pushed to tell the difference – definitely on my no alcohol list of drinks from here on in.’, wrote one.

Another said: ‘@GuinnessIreland need to win the Nobel Peace prize for Guinness 0.0. The amount of arguments about whose driving and who’s drinking that will be avoided. #guinnesszero.’

A third commented: ‘Guinness 0.0. From a lover of Guinness, this is a game changer. Ice cold it is very similar. Would recommend.’

The rollout of Guinness 0.0 to pubs is set to take place in September alongside Guinness’ brand new MicroDraught on-tap technology.

The drink was initially launched in a limited number of supermarkets last year but as a precautionary measure, beverage company Diageo undertook a voluntary recall of Guinness 0.0 after production tests identified the possible contamination of some batches.

Following an investigation across all aspects of the production process, Diageo identified a process failure and has since put in place additional measures and controls throughout the production process to ensure product quality.

Neil Shah, Head of Guinness GB said: ‘We are incredibly pleased to have Guinness 0.0 back on shelves and in pubs and have put in place additional quality assurance measures to make sure this really is the best alcohol-free Guinness possible.

‘So, even if you choose not to drink an alcoholic drink, you can still enjoy an iconic pint of Guinness without the alcohol. We firmly believe we have created a taste experience truly unrivalled in the world of alcohol-free beer and can’t wait for people to try it.’
