Guy Sebastian has spoken candidly about his strict upbringing as a devout Christian.
The 38-year-old musician revealed that he had to ‘burn his non-Christian records’ and wasn’t even allowed to have a sip of alcohol when he was younger.
The admission came on The Voice this week as the mentor spoke to Luke Biscan ahead of the battle rounds. Luke was raised in a ‘cult.’

Luke said that he was forced to choose between his faith and music, and Guy said he understood what he was talking about.
‘I think probably, what you were in was a little more extreme than the things that I was exposed to growing up,’ Guy said.
‘I think when I look back on my life, I can have two trains of thought. I can think about the ”weird” moments, that to me are weird. [But] to a lot of the people who were in my life, and who did these things, their heart wasn’t always bad.’
Rules: ‘I had to burn all of my non-Christian records. I wasn’t allowed to ever have a drink or go into a bar, or even see a non-Christian gig when I was younger,’ Guy said
He added: ‘They just, it’s like you said, they believe what they believe in. I had to burn all of my non-Christian records. I wasn’t allowed to ever have a drink or go into a bar, or even see a non-Christian gig when I was younger. That’s just a chapter in my life.’
Guy went on to say that you have to take the ‘positives’ out of every moment and that he was even told he was ‘just pursuing fame and fortune’ with his career.
‘When I pursued music, I was told, ”oh, he’s just pursuing fame and fortune and he’s left the call of Christ in his life.” There are all these people who want to sum you up,’ Guy said.
His story: According to Luke’s The Voice profile, his late father Mike, a founding member of the band Goanna, joined a religion that’s now considered a cult. Luke was ‘excommunicated’ for ‘disobeying the rules.’ Luke is pictured

According to Popsugar, Luke was part of the Revivalist Christian Church.
He said that he’s now ‘come so far as a person’ from his experience with the church and beyond.
‘I have kind of discovered what and who I am, what I’m made of, what I’m not made of — my limitations, my flaws, everything that’s wrong with me, I’ve come to terms with,’ Luke said.
In 2016 meanwhile, former Australian Idol winner Guy told The Herald Sun that his upbringing was rather ‘manipulative’ and that his two sons will not be subjected to the same ‘controlling’ environment that he was.

‘I want my kids to have a balanced view. I don’t want them to grow up with a close-minded corridor-vision mentality. I want them to have a good understanding of the different sections of society,’ Guy said at the time.
In 2012, Guy told the publication that he was taught there was ‘one way and only one way’ of thinking and that his views subsequently changed as he entered adult life.
Guy, throughout his time on Idol, was dubbed a ‘poster boy’ for being a virgin until marriage. He and wife Jules tied the knot in 2008 and now share two sons together. The couple first met in their teens.
