After a 2020 spent ‘drinking seven nights a week,’ Gwyneth Paltrow says she gave up booze this year — and has had ‘barely any alcohol‘ in 2021.

And much as the 49-year-old says she ‘loves’ drinking — whether it be whiskey, wine, or vodka — she admitted that she sleeps ‘so much better’ since giving it all up.

‘I think what happened was, having gotten COVID and having felt like s***, or like having had long COVID stuff for a while, I just didn’t feel vibrant,’ she said on the Dear Chelsea podcast.

She said that at first she ‘begrudgingly’ gave up alcohol, but now feels ‘so good’ valuing her health and wellness.

‘It’s been a long year of barely any alcohol. I mean I’ve had a sip here and there but very rarely,’ she said.

‘You know me, I love a drink, I love the ritual of it, and I love to sit down and have one and chat. I love the taste of alcohol, like, I love whiskey and wine and, whatever, vodka. I’ll take it all.’

But during the first part of the pandemic, Gwyneth — like so many other people — indulged a bit too much in food and drink.

Back in May, she admitted she had been ‘drinking seven nights a week and making pasta and eating bread.’

‘I went totally off the rails,’ she said. ‘I mean, who drinks multiple drinks seven nights a week? Like, that’s not healthy.’

Speaking on the Dear Chelsea podcast, she said that all of that yummy food and alcohol took its toll on her body.

‘I didn’t feel good, and I had really high inflammation levels and the doctor was like, “Look, you really need to clean up your act. You gotta, at least for three months, no alcohol, no grains, no sugar, nothing processed,” everything like that,’ she said.

‘And so I kind of begrudgingly did it, and then I just started to feel so good,’ she went on.

‘And I don’t know, I’m not going to do it forever, but I think 2021 has been about me trying to value my health and wellness a little bit more because, especially during COVID, I was just eating whatever, drinking seven nights a week.

‘And it’s been really interesting. I sleep so much better with no alcohol, it’s wild.’

Gwyneth had shared her surprising pandemic diet on the SmartLess podcast in May.

‘I love whiskey and I make this fantastic drink called the Buster Paltrow, which I named after my grandfather who loved whiskey sours. And it’s this great quinoa whiskey from this distillery in Tennessee with maple syrup and lemon juice. It’s just heaven. I would have two of those every night of quarantine,’ she said.

'Basically during quarantine, I was drinking seven nights a week and making pasta and eating bread. I went totally off the rails,' she said earlier this year

While Gwyneth’s ‘off the rails’ description seems to be mostly directed at her alcohol intake, social media users zeroed in on her mention of her bread and pasta habit at the time, with many joking that she seemed to be making a big deal over something so commonplace.

‘Damn she better slow down. She might end up becoming a regular person,’ quipped one Twitter user.

‘Just read a very harrowing account of Gwyneth Paltow being forced to eat bread during the pandemic so I might need to lie down for a bit,’ yet another chimed in.

In February, Gwyneth also said that COVID — and permienopause — both made it harder to maintain her famously slim physique.

Gwyneth admitted that she used to be able to ‘snap back’ really easily after putting on a few pounds, but over the past year — since contracting COVID-19 early on — that hasn’t been the case.

‘I’ve noticed over the past couple of years that my metabolism is slowed down,’ she said on the podcast The Art of Being Well.

‘I know a lot of that is perimenopause. I’m 48 years old, and I know that women tend to lose up to 30 per cent of their metabolic speed once we enter this phase of life, et cetera. So I know some of it is that.’

'I gained a lot of weight over COVID,' she went on. 'COVID happened and I didn't do my eating plan. I just was like having alcohol and pasta all the time and then I sort of hit a wall'

But since the past year had been particularly hard, she said she thought her struggle with long COVID has also contributed to her weight issues.

‘I think maybe some of it is because I got COVID,’ she said. ‘My physician in New York was saying that that was affecting a lot of his patients’ metabolisms as well.

‘What I really noticed was the snap back that I used to have — you know, if I gained some weight and I wasn’t happy, I could quickly eat really well for a couple of days, exercise a lot, and it would all be gone.

‘And that was not happening over the past year,’ she added.

However, she added, she has lost 11 pounds since she started Dr. Cole’s ‘Intuitive Fasting’ plan, which includes a week of bone broth.

The program includes, among other things,  refraining from consuming sugar or alcohol, working out, and adding supplements including butyrate, fish oil, B vitamins, vitamin D3, vitamin C, zinc, and selenium.
