In September 2022, Hans made headlines worldwide after suspicions arose that he had cheated in the 2022 Sinquefield Cup, in which he defeat the world champion Magnus Carlsen with a stunning chess move. The accusations gained steam (including a conspiracy theory that he had used vibrating a*al beads) after Carlsen resigned from their online match in the Julius Baer Generation Cup after making just one move. Some viewed Carlsen’s decision to quit midway as proof of Hans’ cheating.
  5. In September 2022, he had accepted to cheating in online games only twice at the ages of 12 and 16 years. However, a thorough investigation conducted by Chess.com found him guilty of cheating in more than 100 online games in October 2022.
