According to official data, happiness levels in the UK have dipped in recent years. A nationwide survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that people in Britain were less happy and more anxious between March 2022 and 2023, compared to the previous year.

The survey took into account happiness, life satisfaction, anxiety and the feeling that things done in life are worthwhile. Given the aftermath of the pandemic coupled with the cost of living crisis, strain on the NHS and ongoing strikes it is unsurprising that many Brits are feeling less optimistic.

This data also allowed the ONS to pinpoint areas of the country that are happier than others. An overall “happiness score” was allocated to various districts, with 10 coming out on top.

Among these happiest places, is one beautiful coastal area beloved by residents and tourists alike. Torridge in Devon, was ranked the sixth happiest spot in the UK, with a score of 8.05 out of 10.

With its stunning coastline and beaches and pretty surrounding countryside it is easy to see why it is placed so highly.

The district is located in the north west of Devon and encompasses quaint seaside towns and villages such as Clovelly, Westward Ho! and Appledore

Torridge District Council says: “Where the North Devon coast meets countryside, offering wonderful opportunities to see and do so much.

“Whether you prefer a relaxing weekend away or a fun packed adventure holiday, the coast, countryside or bustling market towns; Torridge has it all.”

For holidaymakers looking for a seaside getaway there is plenty to see in Torridge.

Clovelly, which sits right at the centre of Torridge’s coastline, is easily one of the most unique places in all of the UK.

As a privately owned fishing village visitors are charged upon entry. But don’t let this put you off, stepping foot inside Clovelly you will feel as if you have gone back in time.

There are no cars allowed in the village and you can walk down the cobblestone streets to the harbour’s edge.

It also offers breathtaking scenery and lengthy walks along the nearby cliff tops.

For those who love a good beach day, Westward Ho!, which is just 20 minutes down the road, has plenty to offer.

Popular with both swimmers and surfers it is renowned for its sandy and stony beach.

Visit Devon says: “Aside from the peculiarities about how it got its name, Westward Ho! is famous for being a delightful village by the sea.

“The seafront is one of North Devon’s most popular surfing and swimming spots, as it combines a large expanse of sand with pebbles, grasslands and a diverse beachscape making it perfect for families, sunbathers and water sports enthusiasts alike.

“Whether you want to spend the day relaxing or having a picnic, there are flat areas, while those that want to do a spot of rockpooling will love the rockier areas and those that love swimming and surfing will find the perfect environment for catching the waves.”

Continuing along the road from Westward Ho! is Appledore, a quiet hilltop fishing village.

Again it boasts a picturesque beach, but one of the key attractions of the area are its pastel-coloured houses that line the streets. It is also known for producing some of the best ice cream in the country.
