As his addiction worsened, Lavoe sought the assistance of a priest to help him overcome his heroin addiction.

He went to treatment and was doing well until a series of unfortunate events occurred, including the deaths of his son, mother, and father-in-law, as well as an HIV diagnosis.

As a result, Lavoe reverted to his previous drug habits. He was so depressed that he attempted suicide.
