Heinrich Klaasen Facts

  1. In a strange coincidence, his international debut in all 3 formats of the sport was against the same team – India (February 2018 in the ODI format, February 2018 in the T20I format, and October 2019 in the test match format).
  2. Heinrich’s ODI (and international) debut came in February 2018, in the 3rd ODI of a 6-match home bilateral series against India. The start of his international career was not very auspicious as India demolished South Africa by 124 runs to take a 3-0 lead in the series. This was India’s biggest win, in terms of runs, against South Africa in South Africa.
  3. Heinrich, though, produced a match-winning performance in the very next match, scoring 43 runs not out off just 27 balls to help South Africa win a rain-affected match by 5 wickets. South Africa, though, went on to lose the last 2 matches of the series, giving India a series victory by a 5–1 margin. This was India’s first bilateral ODI series win in South Africa.
  4. Later that month, he made his T20I debut in the first match of a 3-match bilateral home series against India. In the 2nd match of the series, he scored his maiden T20I fifty, finishing with 69 runs from just 30 balls. His whirlwind knock helped South Africa chase down a steep target of 188 runs with 6 wickets in hand and 8 balls to spare. He was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance.
  5. In July 2019, Heinrich had been selected to represent the Glasgow Giants in the inaugural edition of the Euro T20 Slam (a professional T20 cricket league that aimed to involve 6 city-based franchise teams – 2 each from Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands). However, about a month later, the tournament was canceled.
  6. In February 2021, he captained South Africa for the first time, during an away bilateral T20I series against Pakistan. In April 2021, he was again named South Africa’s T20I captain. This time, it was for a home bilateral series against Pakistan, as regular captain Temba Bavuma was ruled out due to an injury.
