A talented baker has wowed thousands after sharing his very simple recipe for creating KFC-inspired popcorn chicken at home.

Morgan Hipworth, from Melbourne, shared the recipe in a now-viral TikTok video showing exactly how he made the snack covered in herbs and spices.

To make the dish, you’ll need chicken breast and buttermilk, along with dried ingredients such as corn flour, paprika, garlic and onion powders, oregano, basil, mustard powder and chicken salt for seasoning.

The 19-year-old suggested dicing up the chicken into one by one centimetre cubes, then marinate in a bowl with butter milk and a pinch of sea salt for half an hour.

While the chicken breast is marinating, prepare the dry mixture in another bowl, combining corn flour, pepper, herbs and spices together.

‘Drain the chicken from the buttermilk, and then toss them into the dry mix,’ he said.

‘Shallow fry in vegetable oil for about three minutes or until golden and crispy.’

INGREDIENTS 

1 chicken breast, diced into 1cm cubes

For the marinade:

100ml buttermilk

Pinch of sea salt

For the dry mix:

100g corn flour

1tbsp each of paprika, garlic powder and onion powder

1tbsp each of pepper, oregano, basil and mustard powder

300ml vegetable oil, to fry

Chicken salt, to season

METHOD 

Combine the diced chicken, buttermilk and salt in a bowl and allow to marinade at room temperature for 30 minutes. Whilst the chicken is marinading in another bowl combine all the dry mix ingredients.

Heat a fry pan over medium with the vegetable oil.

Drain the chicken from the buttermilk and dust generously into the dry mix and then into the hot oil. Fry for around two to three minutes or until golden and crispy.

Drain on paper bowl and toss with chicken salt. Serve and enjoy!

Remove the chicken pieces from the pan and place on a plate or bowl with paper towel.

‘Season with a generous amount of chicken salt. Boom, homemade popcorn chicken, dig in and enjoy,’ Morgan said.

His video has since been viewed more than 300,000 times, with hundreds saying they couldn’t wait to try his recipe at home while others said his popcorn chicken looks just as good as KFC’s version.

‘Now this I’m going to try to make (I’m no cook like you but hey let’s give it a go),’ one wrote, while another added: ‘This looks amazing.’

And one said: ‘Thanks for sharing this recipe. You saved me even more money.’ 

Dozens of followers who tried the recipe at home confirmed the popcorn tasted delicious, with one woman saying: ‘Absolutely stunning. 10 out of 10 and the family really enjoyed them.’
