A home cook has revealed her unusual secret ingredient she swears by for making the perfect cheesy potato bake for her family.

Jasmine, from Sydney, shared her easy-to-follow recipe on her Instagram showing exactly how she makes the creamy dish at home.

She said all you’ll need are potatoes, thickened cream, shredded cheese, garlic powder, salt and pepper – and the secret ingredient she adds to the mixture – French onion soup mix, which she gets from Coles for just 45 cents.

‘Secret ingredient is French onion soup mix. It may seem strange but trust me it’s what makes this 10 times more flavourful than the other potato bakes,’ she said.

‘Best potato bake ever. Bring this to your next party and people will lose their sh**.’

How to make a cheesy potato bake

INGREDIENTS

15 small potatoes

French onion soup

1/2 tbsp garlic powder

Shredded cheese

600mL thickened cream

Salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 180 degrees, and then thinly slice the potatoes – about one centimetres thick – after peeling them.

In a large baking dish, season the potatoes with the French onion soup mix, garlic powder and salt and pepper to taste.

Toss the potatoes through until well coated. Pour the cream over the top until the potatoes are covered.

Once the potatoes are layered out, bake the dish in the oven, covered with foil for about 50 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

Take the dish out of the oven, remove foil, and then sprinkle cheese on top. Bake at 250 degrees until cheese is golden brown.

Rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
