Dr Michael Rowe revealed the simplest method to get rid of a double chin, which doesn’t require an expensive trip to a beauty clinic, and is not a full-blown workout. To help strengthen the muscles around the jaw and neck, which in turn will tighten up the skin under the chin, all you need is a tennis ball. That’s right, a single tennis ball (with a pack of three selling for £3 at Asda) could help you to get rid of a double chin in no time.

Dr Rowe explained: “A tennis ball works perfectly; take a tennis ball and place it right underneath your chin and then press your chin into your chest. As you do this, you’re going to feel [lots] of muscles in the neck start to fire; hold this [move] comfortably for five seconds, relax, and then repeat.”

This simple exercise with the tennis ball should be repeated around 10 to 15 times.

“With each repetition, try to press down into it just a little bit more; this is something you want to do about two to three times a day.” If you experience any soreness, Dr Rowe advises to “add in some recovery time” too.

What causes a double chin?

Dr Javier Zelaya at SkinWorks Dermatology said a double chin can affect people of all sizes.

While weight can play a part in the development of a double chin, so can genetics, increasing age, and posture.

Dr Zelaya elaborated: “Your posture can weaken neck and chin muscles over time. Eventually, the skin in that area loses elasticity if the muscles aren’t used frequently.”

To help tighten up the neck muscles, Dr Zelaya approves of the tennis ball method, but he adds there are other methods too.

Neck and facial exercises include:

  • Rotating your head in a circle to gently to warm up
  • Tilt your head back and pretend to whistle
  • Then stand with your head back and pucker the lips

While a healthy diet and exercise play a part, there are medical options for those wanting a quicker fix.

“Treatment options for your double chin include lipolysis (also known as liposculpture) and mesotherapy,” said Dr Zelaya.

He explained: “Mesotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that involves injections of a fat-dissolving compound.” Side effects of the treatment can include swelling, bruising, and pain.
