In a small, four-week study in six women, drinking 300ml of sage tea twice daily resulted in 16 percent lower total cholesterol, 20 percent lower LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol, and 38 percent higher HDL ‘good’ cholesterol.

A two-month study in 105 people with type 2 diabetes on cholesterol-lowering drugs also found those who took 500mg of sage extract three times daily had healthier levels of triglycerides and all cholesterol markers, compared with those in the control group.

Triglycerides are the main constituents of body fat in humans.

It should be noted that much of the research on sage had been conducted in animals and test tubes and highly concentrated extracts were used. More human studies are needed.
