Ilhan Omar is a Somalian woman who was born in Mogadishu, Somalia and spent her childhood in Baidoa, Somalia. Her mother died when Omar was two, so she was raised by her father and grandfather. Omar and her family spent four years in a Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya, to escape the war. They arrived in New York, America, in 1992, and lived in Virginia for a while before moving to and settling in Minneapolis.

Career

Omar began her career as a nutrition educator at the University of Minnesota in America. Ilhan has always wanted to be a politician and make a difference in the world. She ran for the Minnesota House of Representatives on the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) ticket in 2016, and she won. Her term began on January 3, 2017, and she became the country’s first Somali-American legislator.
