Learn About Pele Family Background

Pelé was born Edson Arantes do Nascimento in Três Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil, to his parents Dondinho and Celeste Arantes.

His Father, Dondinho, a.k.a. João Ramos do Nascimento, was a footballer and played for Fluminense.

Pele was the elder of two siblings, with a younger brother named Zeca Nascimento.

His real name, Edson, was inspired by American inventor Thomas Edison. He was also nicknamed “Dico” by his family.

He later received the nickname “Pelé” in school because of the way he pronounced the name of his favorite local player, Vasco da Gama goalkeeper Bilé.

In his autobiography, he wrote that he or his friends had no idea what the name meant. The name is also thought to mean “miracle” in Hebrew but has no meaning in local Portuguese.

Pele grew up poor in Bauru in São Paulo and made extra money by working as a servant in tea shops.

His dad taught him to play football, but he usually played with a sock stuffed with newspaper because he could not afford a proper ball.

Pele has several children from three marriages and other affairs. They include Edinho, Kelly Cristina, Joshua, Celeste, and Flavia. Home
