Jack William Nicklaus was born in Columbus, Ohio, on January 21, 1940, to Charlie and Helen Nicklaus. He was raised in Upper Arlington, Ohio.
He attended Upper Arlington High School, where he played basketball. Nicklaus attended Ohio State University and played golf in college. He began golfing when he was ten years old. He won the Ohio State Junior Championship when he was 12 years old. He was the youngest qualifier in the US Junior Amateur at the age of 13.

He won both the 1959 and 1961 Walker Cups while representing the United States. He began his professional PGA Tour career in 1962. In 1962, he won his first professional title at the US Open. Nicklaus then won the Portland Open and the Seattle Open.
He won the PGA Championships and the Masters in 1963. In 1965 and 1966, he became the first person to win the Masters twice in a row. In 1971, he became the first player in history to win all four majors twice.
