A “well decorated” young basketball player for the Manawatu Jets, Jake McKinley, died in a car accident.

According to the team’s social media posts, Jake McKinlay was slain early Monday morning.

“It is with heavy hearts and enormous regret that we mourn the loss of a member of the Jets family, Jake McKinlay, who was tragically killed in a car accident this morning,” the message read.

There are no words to describe our grief and sadness for this outstanding young man who still had his entire life ahead of him. Our warmest condolences go out to Jake’s family and friends at this terrible time.

In the Horowhenua region, a car and a truck collided on State Highway 1 north of Taki, soon before 6 a.m. on Monday, killing one person.

McKinlay is believed to have been the victim; however, authorities have not confirmed this.

Darryl June, the general manager of the Manawatu Jets, said the team would issue an official statement on McKinlay’s death on Tuesday.
