Jeremy Lalrinnunga is an Indian weightlifter who came into the spotlight in July 2022 when he clinched the ‘Gold’ medal in the 67 kg weight class at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. He lifted 140 kg in snatch which set a new Commonwealth Games record. He then lifted 160 kg in clean & jerk to achieve a total lift of 300 kg. This total was also a new Commonwealth Games record. At the 2021 Tashkent Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, he won the ‘Gold’ medal in the 67 kg weight class. His first major achievement that made national headlines, though, was the ‘Gold’ medal that he won at the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games in the 62 kg weight class with a lift of 274 kg (124 kg in snatch and 150 kg in clean & jerk). This was India’s first ‘Gold’ medal in the history of the Youth Olympics Games (this was the 3rd edition after the competition first began in 2010) as well as Jeremy’s first appearance at a major multi-sport, multinational event. Just a month before this, he recorded a total lift of 273 kg at a tournament organized at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS), the academic wing of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Asia’s largest sports institute, located in the city of Patiala in the northern Indian state of Punjab.

  1. Jeremy, inspired by his father, a former national-level boxer, developed a keen interest in the sport, as a child. He even used to train at his father’s academy until the age of 8 when the facility was shut down due to financial constraints.
  2. It was then that his father encouraged him to change focus and pursue weightlifting. Around the same time, in 2011, a talent scout noticed him lift weights and invited him to train at the Army Sports Institute (a multi-disciplinary facility that imparts training in archery, athletics, boxing, diving, wrestling, fencing, and weightlifting) in Pune, Maharashtra.
  3. At the 2016 IWF (International Weightlifting Federation) Youth World Weightlifting Championships, held in Penang, Malaysia, he clinched the ‘Silver’ medal in the 56 kg weight class.
  4. At the 2017 edition of the tournament held in Bangkok, Thailand, in the 56 kg weight class, he again won the ‘Silver’ medal with a lift of 240 kg (110 kg in snatch and 130 kg in clean & jerk).
