Jessie Ware has revealed she once drank alcohol with French football legend Eric Cantona without realising she was eight weeks pregnant.

The singer, 36, who has a three-year-old daughter and a 21-month-old son with her personal trainer husband Sam Burrows, met the former Manchester United striker while attending the annual Soccer Aid charity match at Old Trafford.

Speaking about the encounter on her Table Manners podcast, she said: ‘I met Eric at Soccer Aid. He is the coolest guy in the world and he said, “Do you want to go for a drink?”

‘I didn’t want to, I was actually really tired, but I thought, “Eric Cantona’s asking me if I wanna have a drink.”

‘I didn’t actually realise I was eight weeks pregnant at the time, so I had that bloody glass of wine and talked about when he used to play.’

Jessie said that she had a great time with Cantona and admitted she wished she had been able to speak French to the retired France international, who quit football to embark on an acting career in 1997.

She added: ‘He was so kind of philosophical. I wished I could have spoken French then. He was amazing.’

The singer recently admitted her heartbreak songs aren’t autobiographical as she’s been happily married for six years.

She released albums Devotion and Tough Love in 2012 and 2014 respectively, before following up with 2017’s Gallhouse and the critically acclaimed What’s Your Pleasure earlier this year.

Jessie explained: ‘Romantically I’ve been with the same bloke since I was 18 so there’s never been much drama going on there.

‘But I think being a songwriter I have experimented and explored and not necessarily felt like everything has to be fully autobiographical and I think that really has emancipated me in my writing process and take to it in a different way.’

The Say You Love Me hitmaker also noted that ‘being a mother’ hasn’t altered her process as a songwriter.

She added: ‘I don’t think being a mother really changed the way I made music; it changed my time in the studio so I don’t piss about for hours on end because I’ve got other things to do.

‘Being a mother didn’t really come into this record and that’s OK because I’m many things apart from a mother.’

The songwriter welcomed her second child, a son, in March last year at home in her living room.

Posting a candid snap of her breast-feeding her newborn baby boy, Jessie wrote alongside the sweet image: ‘Last night I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy in my living room.

‘I couldn’t have done it without the MOST fantastic NHS Homerton Homebirthing team: Francine, Annie and Roisin.

‘The level of care and kindness they offered us was incredible. Once again I’m reminded how much we should cherish our special NHS #saveournhs.’

Jessie and Sam have not publicly announced the names of their children.
