American politician Joe Lieberman has died at the age of 82, CNN confirmed. “Former United States Senator Joesph I. Lieberman died this afternoon, March 27, 2024, in New York City due to complications from a fall,” his family revealed. “Senator Lieberman’s love of God, his family, and America endured throughout his life of service in the public interest.” Lieberman was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his death and he’s survived by his wife, Hadassah.

During his lifetime, the political figure made a name for himself as a U.S. senator. Eleven years after entering the Senate, he set his sights on the White House, joining former vice president Al Gore’s Democratic presidential campaign as the first Jewish individual to run for VP. “I am proud to stand by your side and ready to use every ounce of strength and capacity that the good Lord has given me to make you the next great president of the United States,” Lieberman said during his announcement rally at the time (via C-SPAN).

After losing the controversial election to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, the Connecticut politician continued to work in the Senate until he announced his retirement in December 2012. “At the end of this term, I will have served 24 years in the U.S. Senate and 40 years in elective office. For me, it is time for another season and another purpose under heaven,” he said, per HuffPost. Despite his exit from the Senate, Lieberman still had a hand in politics until his death.
