Joe Quesada Facts

  1. Joe had primarily been raised in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York City, which was 15 blocks away from Shea Stadium (demolished in 2009), a multi-purpose stadium that was the home park of the professional baseball team New York Mets for 45 seasons (1964–2008) and the professional American football team New York Jets from 1964 to 1983. His father was a part of the construction crew that had built the stadium, around the time that Joe was born. Joe grew up to be an ardent supporter of the New York Mets.
  2. He first became a fan of comic books after getting engrossed in the storyline of The Amazing Spider-Man which he had started reading around issue #98. He felt that he could relate to the superhero character because both he and Spider-Man grew up in Queens. He has often also stated that this was the character that he had enjoyed drawing the most during his career.
  3. By the time he had graduated from the School of Visual Arts New York City, he had drifted away from comic books as he had come to think of them as a child’s medium. Around this time, in the 1980s, he used to play the guitar in a local band called Idle Chatter. He was also a member of another New York City-based band called Brass Trax and had participated in that group’s reunion shows in 2002 and 2003.
  4. His interest in comic books was rekindled in the late 1980s after a friend had bought him a copy of The Dark Knight Returns, a 1986 four-issue comic book miniseries that is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential Batman stories ever published and one of the greatest works of comic art.
  5. In 1993, he had won the ‘Diamond Gem Award’ in the category of ‘Best Cover’ for X-O Manowar #0.
