Jonathan was born on January 31, 1947. He was born in Washington DC and grew up in Chillum Heights, Maryland.
At Northwood High School in Silver Spring, he completed his high school. Banks graduated from Indiana University Bloomington where he was a classmate of actor Kevin Kline.
He was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from Indiana University in April 2016.
After graduation, he joined a touring company called Hair as a stage manager and traveled to Australia and New Zealand.
In Australia, he began acting in stage productions.
