Juhi Chaturvedi Facts
- After graduating from the Lucknow College of Arts and Crafts (LCAC), Juhi’s career began as a freelance illustrator for the Lucknow edition of The Times of India, the oldest English-language newspaper in India. It is the 3rd-largest newspaper in India by circulation, the 2nd-oldest Indian newspaper still in circulation, and the largest-selling English-language daily in the world.
- In 1996, Juhi moved to Delhi and joined the advertising department of Ogilvy & Mather (a New York City-based British advertising, marketing, and public relations agency) as an art director. In 1999, she shifted to Mumbai and joined the agency’s office there.
- In 2008, she joined the Mumbai branch of McCann (an American global advertising agency network with offices in 120 countries). Juhi later also worked as a creative director in Mumbai with Bates CHI & Partners, an advertising and marketing agency that is a member of WPP plc, a British multinational communication, advertising, public relations, technology, and commerce holding company headquartered in London.
- It was around this time that she first worked with filmmaker, director, and producer Shoojit Sircar – on advertisement films for brands like Titan (an Indian company that manufactures watches, jewelry, and eyewear) and Saffola (an Indian cooking oil brand).
- Juhi then wrote the dialogues for Shoebite, a film about a man in his early 60s – played by the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. It would have been Shoojit’s 2nd film – after the 2005 Hindi-language war drama and romance film titled Yahaan – but it got canceled.
- Thankfully, the pair’s collaboration continued with Juhi working as a screenwriter for multiple critically acclaimed films directed by Shoojit – Vicky Donor (2012), Madras Cafe (2013), Piku (2015), October (2018), and Gulabo Sitabo (2020).
- For the 2012 Hindi-language romantic comedy film titled Vicky Donor, she won the ‘Best Story’ award at the 2013 Filmfare Awards as well as the 2013 Producers Guild Film Awards. This was her first film as a screenwriter and interestingly, Vicky Arora, the protagonist of the movie, lives in Lajpat Nagar (a residential and commercial neighborhood in the South East Delhi district) where Juhi used to live during her time in Delhi (1996-1999).
- She tapped into her experience of living in Lajpat Nagar to accurately capture the neighborhood’s essence in her script, an aspect of the movie that was widely appreciated. For her work on the script of Vicky Donor, Juhi also won an IRDS Film Award for Social Concern in the category of ‘Best Story’. IRDS (Institute for Research and Documentation in Social Sciences) is a Lucknow-based civil society organization.
- In July 2013, she joined the Mumbai branch of Leo Burnett Worldwide, Inc. (an American advertising company) as its executive creative director.
- For the 2015 Hindi-language comedy-drama film titled Piku, Juhi won the ‘Best Screenplay’ award at the 2016 Filmfare Awards, the ‘Best Original Screenplay’ award at the 2016 National Film Awards, and the ‘Best Story’ award at the 2016 IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) Awards.
- For the 2020 Hindi-language comedy-drama film titled Gulabo Sitabo, Juhi won the ‘Best Dialogue’ award at the 2021 Filmfare Awards.
