Just one glass of wine poured at home is enough to tip you over the drink-drive limit, a study has found.

In an experiment, 100 drivers were asked to free-pour standard measures of alcohol served in pubs.

Some 62 per cent over-poured a 175ml glass of wine, while 75 per cent were over-generous with a single 25ml spirit measure.

The findings expose the dangers of home-poured drinks, which can be far larger than those served in pubs, said Direct Line Car Insurance which commissioned the research.

The experiment highlights the risk of New Year revellers putting themselves over the limit without realising.

The drink-drive limit is 80 milligrams per 100ml of blood.

In separate research, among motorists who legally drink and drive, nearly a fifth would drink if they were the designated driver.

Meanwhile, nearly 14 per cent of motorists admit to having driven when they thought they were over the limit in the previous six months.

Simon Henrick, of Direct Line, said: ‘This research is a warning to anyone planning to visit someone else’s home over New Year.’
