K. U. Mohanan Facts

  1. He has recalled that the temple art form and culture of Theyyam of Payyanur had helped him in developing his interest in art. When he was a kid he would sit for hours during the facial painting of the Theyyam, that would fascinate him. He was extremely interested in drama and used to watch Malayalam films or the Tamil and Telugu dubbed movies in the local cinema halls. He used to regularly visit the Payyanur Swarga Film Society from 1978 to 1980, that was a major force that helped his interest in cinema to grow and develop.
  2. Mohanan has recollected that after his degree in film, he had worked as a documentary cinematographer for more than a decade. He typically did not have much time or equipment at his disposal while making the documentaries and had no other option than to learn to manage as well as do expressive work with whatever that was available. He learned to go through the given script in all reality and literality and try to capture everything that was there with the help of only ambient light. He has been grateful for his experiences as they made him truly understand the workings of light in real spaces, that had led to working for feature films a lot more easier. Even if he has had the space lit up, he has simulated the natural behavior of light in it.
  3. He has revealed that his work has been largely governed by his impulses. There have been parts in his movies where the camera movement had been planned well in advance while in other places, there have been a lot of improvisations with the actors. He has added that unless and until he has a certain kind of treatment planned ahead for a scene, it has usually been his impulses and reactions that he has solely depended upon.
  4. Mohanan has affirmed that in the film Don, he had planned a visual style in order to make it look different from other movies. He has added that in the car chase scene, he was carrying the camera while being on the edge of the car that was running at top speed.
  5. He has been a member of the Indian Society of Cinematographers.
  6. He has opined that cinematography is much more than just creating pretty images and that it should help in the storytelling. He has believed that good cinematography has originated from observation of life around, as well as from watching films.
