Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers to be diagnosed in the UK, warned the NHS.

Around 45,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer in the UK every year.

Signs of the disease only tend to reveal themselves once the cancer has spread through the lungs.

One of the key warning signs of lung cancer is wheezing while you breathe.

“Different people have different symptoms for lung cancer,” said the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Some people have symptoms related to the lungs. Some people whose lung cancer has spread to other parts of the body have symptoms specific to that part of the body.

“Lung cancer symptoms may include coughing that gets worse or doesn’t go away, chest pain, shortness of breath [and] wheezing.

“Other changes that can sometimes occur with lung cancer may include repeated bouts of pneumonia and swollen or enlarged lymph nodes [glands] inside the chest in the area between the lungs.”

But, just because you start wheezing, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have lung cancer.

It’s more likely to be caused by a tumour if it’s accompanied by other tell-tale signs of lung cancer.

Your wheezing may also be caused by asthma, hay fever, or sleep apnoea.

You should speak to a doctor if you have wheezing as well as difficulty breathing.
