A man has been charged with murder after a nine-year-old girl disappeared in the NSW Blue Mountains six days ago.

The 32-year-old man was arrested at an apartment in Surry Hills at about 8.30pm on Tuesday.

He was taken to Surry Hills Police Station and charged with murder, and will face court on Wednesday morning.

Human remains have been found but are yet to be formally identified, Radio 2GB reported.

Detectives last night carried out a search at the Colo River, about an hour’s drive away from Mount Wilson where the girl disappeared.

The little girl was last seen at the property on the verandah on Thursday.

But police were only notified of her disappearance at 8.20am the following day.

The man will face Central Local Court on Wednesday morning.

A neighbour of the property where the girl vanished from told Daily Mail Australia his wife was reading at 4.30am on Friday when she heard the sound of a car on the driveway.

‘She got out of bed and went to the window and saw a shadow moving,’ John Haitzler told Daily Mail Australia.

‘It is very quiet here at night and you can see the headlights – there weren’t any on.’

Mr Haitzler said his wife couldn’t see what make of car it was or who was driving it, but that he reported it to police after he heard a little girl had gone missing from next door.
