Marion Bartoli Facts
- Marion started playing tennis when she was about 6 years old. In her developmental years, she was coached by her father, a relationship that continued for her most of her professional career.
- Her father had no background in tennis but had prematurely retired from his career as a medical doctor to learn how to become a tennis coach so that he could train his daughter so well that she could one day become a professional tennis player.
- When she won the Wimbledon singles title in July 2013, the first and only Grand Slam tournament (Australian Open/French Open/Wimbledon Championship/US Open) victory of her career (singles or doubles), she had become just the 6th female player in the Open Era to win the Wimbledon singles title without losing a set. The other players to have achieved this feat before Marion are Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Lindsay Davenport, Venus Williams, and Serena Williams.
- The victory also made Marion, at that time, the female player who had participated in the most number of Grand Slam tournaments before winning one. This was her 47th appearance in the main draw of the singles event of a Grand Slam tournament. The record was previously held by former Czech professional tennis player Jana Novotná who won the Wimbledon singles title in 1998 in what was her 45th appearance in the main draw of the singles event of a Grand Slam tournament.
- Like Marion, this remained the only singles Grand Slam title of Jana’s career. However, Jana won 12 Grand Slam doubles titles (compared to Marion’s none). Marion and Jana have another connection too. Jana was supposed to begin coaching Marion in March 2013 but the arrangement was canceled about a week after the deal was announced.
