Marques Houston is proud to be a father. The Sister, Sister star tells PEOPLE exclusively about his life as a dad, which takes precedence over everything.

“I’m very instrumental in my daughter’s life,” Marques shares with PEOPLE. “I’m not one of those absent fathers that’s just always working and never paying attention to his family because I feel like family is first,” Houston reveals.

“I always say being a husband and father are two of my biggest accomplishments in life so I take that very seriously,” the actor continues. “I’m really, really happy about being a dad.”

Marques Houston and his wife, Miya, welcomed their daughter, Zara, last December. The celebrity parents have been sharing candids of their little one since welcoming Zara just in time for Christmas.

“I can’t wait until she gets old enough to where she starts talking and, you know, I can have her on set with me and just kind of take her around,” Marques tells PEOPLE. “She’s like our little road dog,” Houston shares with the press. “She goes everywhere with us.”

Zara may not be old enough to accompany her father on set when he is making films, but that does not mean she cannot listen to her dad’s music. “Zara listens to my album and I put it on for her,” Houston shares with PEOPLE “She’ll even try to sing along,” the celebrity father adds.

“You know, she can’t really sing or anything like that yet but she tries to make little noises and kind of groove to the music,” Marques reveals. “And so that’s why I say the inspiration is just life, just really me knowing who I am as a person and as a husband and father.”

Zara made Marques Houston a father for the first time. The actor and his wife celebrate two years of marriage this year.
