Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas delivered a speech to Al Sharpton’s National Action Network conference in New York City on Friday. He told those attending the conference that “the greatest terrorism-related threat that we face in the homeland is the threat of domestic violent extremism.”
Mayorkas dug in a little deeper and blamed social media and other online platforms for an “increase in hate”, specifically naming White supremacists as “the most prominent threat” to the United States. He used the example of bomb threats to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). In recent months there has been an alleged uptick in those threats. He spoke about working with Black universities and churches to help them improve security.
This is not the first time that Mayorkas has blamed the greatest threat of domestic terrorism on White supremacists. In May 2021, Mayorkas and Attorney General Merrick Garland testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee. At that time they both testified that their agencies needed more resources to fight domestic terrorism, pointing in particular to the events of January 6 at the Capitol. Left out of the equation by both Mayorkas and Garland was any talk of the violent social unrest that has plagued the United States since the Summer of Love organized by radical progressives. Funny how that happens.
I’m just spitballing here but I’m pretty sure that there have been far more incidents of violence – domestic terrorism – at the hands of violent leftists than there have been by White supremacists. White supremacists held tiki torches and an unfortunate death was recorded from an infamous protest march in Charlottesville that turned violent, for example, that the left conflates with Trump supporters, but there is radio silence from the left on the burning and destruction of major cities by progressives and their anarchist supporters. They, too, should be labeled as domestic terrorists.
The irony is not lost on those of us who keep an eye on what is happening along the southern border that Mayorkas doesn’t bother to mention the threat to national security that the Biden border crisis poses to the United States. He was happy to tell the convention audience that Title 42 would be ending soon and migrants will be able to claim asylum. What he didn’t say was that the asylum process has been interrupted by the historically high number of illegal border crossers that Joe Biden’s decisions have created. There were more than 1.7 million migrant encounters in FY 2021 and FY2022 is on track to see a doubling of that number. It is impossible to properly vet all those people at the border, much less account for the ones who run to avoid apprehension by Border Patrol and other law enforcement, known as the “got aways”.

Mayorkas distracts from the obvious threat at the southern border by pointing attention to White supremacists elsewhere in the country.
“Our asylum laws provide that if one qualifies, one can access residency in the United States,” Mayorkas said. “And if one does not, one can be removed. In the time of the pandemic, we have been exercising Title 42.
“It is a public health imperative, not an immigration policy. … Title 42 will end on May 23 as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has expressed, and then we will be implementing our asylum process as it was designed.”
It’s true that Title 42 is a public health policy put forth by the CDC and is rarely used. Once the pandemic began in 2020, CDC recommended to the previous administration that Title 42 be used to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus at the southern border. Since then it has been an effective aid in helping control overcrowding at the border. However, the reason DHS has not been able to maintain the legal asylum process at the southern border is because of the overwhelming numbers of illegal migrants that Border Patrol agents have to deal with every day since Biden took office. Without whatever help Title 42 has been, the coming explosion of illegal migration predicted to occur due to its ending is predicted to be catastrophic.
All threats of domestic terrorism must be investigated and taken seriously, that’s a given. However, let’s be honest about the real threats to our national security. To single out a very small population that are identified as White supremacists as the biggest threat to domestic security seems insincere at best, delusional is more accurate, when a constant flow of people are crossing the southern border from around the world. The opioid crisis is exacerbated by drug cartels along the border who are experiencing immense success during the Biden border crisis. Human trafficking is documented at unprecedented numbers. None of these problems are being adequately addressed while Mayorkas is concentrating on one group instead of the Biden border crisis that is obvious for all to see. Blaming White supremacists for domestic security problems while pandering at a conference hosted by a career race-baiter like Sharpton shows that Mayorkas does not intend to change course and honestly work to secure the safety of all American citizens. Bomb threats to HBCUs are not acceptable. Fortunately, so far all have been found to be only talk, no action.
